We invite you to a journey in chemistry which will allow you to see and understand the molecular principles underlying beneath the formation of functional materials.
Biomineralization, the process by which organisms sequester ionic and/or molecular building blocks and synthesize materials such as structural scaffolds – skeletons and shells, optical – lenses and waveguides, and bioavailable calcium reservoirs, are of utmost scientific and technological interest as these are produced by organisms via intra- or extra-cellular high-fidelity processes.
In the lab we use advanced solid state NMR spectroscopy as our molecular eyes to unravel the intricate molecular details of both intact natural biominerals or biomimetic (lab made) systems.
In the summer project the student will join the solid-state NMR characterization of a biomimetic system.
